The Hummer EV is a bewildering vehicle. It’s an insane revival of one of the biggest gas guzzlers in history, but it’s electric. We definitely live in strange times.
But the Hummer EV is much more than a simple rebirth of the H2 Hummer. It’s an amazing electric vehicle full of awesome tech and features that will blow your mind.
1. Three Electric Motors
The GMC Hummer EV has something in common with the almighty Tesla Model S Plaid. But, if you’re wondering what in the world these two seemingly polar opposite vehicles could have in common, it’s the electric motors. Well, not the motors per se, but the number of motors.
The Hummer and the Tesla both feature three electric motors, which produce around 1,000 horsepower. We all know how mind-numbingly quick the Model S Plaid is, but the Hummer EV is also an absolute monster.
According to GM’s estimates, the Hummer EV Pickup can accelerate from 0-60 MPH in 3 seconds, which puts it on par with the Rivian R1T. However, the Rivian weighs less than the Hummer, so it probably has the overall performance advantage.
Hummer’s other SUV model can complete the sprint to 60 MPH in 3.5 seconds. Strangely, the performance varies between the pickup and the SUV, but both are comically fast, so it doesn’t really matter much in the real world.
2. 35″ Off-Road Tires
The Hummer EV is supposed to be an off-roading savant, but it’s a bit difficult to imagine a vehicle that weighs over 9,000 pounds and is basically a house on wheels being the best choice for tackling technical off-road trails. Regardless, the Hummer has all the necessary hardware to be an excellent off-roader (at least on paper).
Part of this off-road worthiness comes from the massive 35″ Goodyear tires. These tires help the Hummer boast amazing ground clearance and help once you hit the trail.
Although, it’s highly unlikely a truck like this will ever see any mud. This doesn’t really matter, though, because most off-road trucks sold at the moment are just show vehicles, most people don’t take them off-road, but the owners like to talk about how capable their trucks are. When it comes to looking the part, very few of the current EV SUVs can match the Hummer.
This is a strange phenomenon, but off-road-ready SUVs keep selling like hotcakes, so it’s unlikely auto manufacturers will stop producing these kinds of vehicles.
3. CrabWalk
The Hummer EVs ultimate party trick is the CrabWalk. It’s a feature made possible by the Hummer EV’s four-wheel steering and is one of the first things that come to mind when discussing the Hummer EV.
It’s probably not a super useful feature all the time, but it’s something that can be very helpful in certain situations. For example, promotional videos from GMC show the Hummer EV using this feature on pavement and maneuvering through obstacles in amazing fashion.
But, this feature should really come alive in certain off-road situations, over a loose surface while moving through very close obstacles.
To be fair, the GMC Hummer EV can use all the help it can get tackling tight trails; the thing is absurdly large for a supposed off-roading machine. Regardless, the CrabWalk feature is good to have in situations where the truck has to make an impossible turn o an off-road trail.
4. Four-Wheel Steering
The Hummer EV has four-wheel steering, a system that GMC has been perfecting for a while now. In fact, GM’s Quadrasteer (developed in conjunction with Delphi) has been around in GM pickup trucks since the early 2000s.
Now, four-wheel steering is making a comeback in the Hummer EV. This system helps the Hummer EV, or any large vehicle, by reducing its turning radius and making it more nimble in tight spots.
Usually, four-wheel steering systems turn the rear wheels in the opposite directions of the fronts in low-speed situations, which is exactly what the Hummer EV does.
If the vehicle is traveling at higher speeds, the wheels will turn in unison to aid with stability. The other turning mode is the famous CrabWalk, a unique feature of the Hummer EV, as it allows the front and rear wheels to turn in the same direction at low speeds, providing extraordinary levels of lateral movement.
Say what you want about the Hummer EV, but GM its big EV truck features some brilliant engineering. The GMC Hummer EV is almost like a concept car full of future GM tech that you can buy right now.
5. 9,000 Pounds of EV
Electric vehicles have one thing going against them. It’s not difficult to guess what it is either, as the batteries that power EVs also make them very heavy. But, the Hummer EV says hold my beer, multiple times.
This mountain of a vehicle weighs over 9,000 pounds, which is crazy even in the world of EVs, where heavy vehicles are the norm. The Hummer EV is a huge off-road capable electric vehicle with a 300+ mile range, which means the battery is huge.
A large portion of the vehicle’s heft comes from the power storage unit, but the Hummer EV is so ridiculously heavy that you’d have to wonder if GMC kept adding more weight as a design feature.
Although, that wouldn’t make much sense because off-roading in a 9,000-pound vehicle brings a lot of complications. Hopefully, GMC can find a way to trim some of the Hummer EV’s heft through its lifecycle.
6. UltraVision Camera System
The Hummer EV Pickup is enormous, so if you’re planning on taking it off-road (or anywhere), you’ll want to ensure you have a good view of your surroundings.
Thanks to the Hummer EV Pickup truck’s 18 cameras, you can confidently navigate your surroundings, no matter how difficult the trail. The Hummer EV even has underbody cameras, which are probably super useful while patrolling your local mall’s parking lot.
The Hummer EV is already one of the most absurd vehicles ever made, so the fact that it features a boatload of cameras shouldn’t come as a shock. The entire point of this EV monstrosity is to go big, a lot of the time, for no apparent reason. With that philosophy in mind, a million onboard cameras sound just about right.
The Hummer EV Is Excess Personified
The Hummer EV is not an SUV for the timid. It’s a brash SUV that’s completely in your face about the fact that it’s large and in charge.
If you’re in the market for a sensible EV that will get you from point A to B in relative anonymity, forget about the Hummer. This is a vehicle for those that want to shout to the world that they’ve arrived, and the Hummer accomplishes this, even without an exhaust note.
