Today is the 165th birthday of Nikola Tesla, who is such an intriguing historical character and I wanted to mark the day with something small. He was a visionary so far ahead of his time with a wealth of ideas for the betterment of humanity. However, he was a poor businessman and often found himself out of luck, and his push for the introduction of AC led to smear campaign by his former employer and competitor Thomas Edison. Edison claimed that Tesla’s alternating current was dangerous and would demonstrate this through the mass electrocution of cats, dogs, horses and even elephants. This culminated in the creation of the electric chair, and AC was used to power the first execution by electricity, killing William Kemmler after a number of painful and horrific attempts. I wanted to showcase this, the pressure on Tesla falsely claiming that he was dangerous and negligent, the xenophobia he faced, the mockery, the financial peril he was in a result of taking American businessmen and investors at their word. He was an excellent but tragic figure who died alone and penniless in his old age.
