A new all-electric garbage truck recently made its first pickup in downtown Portland, at an event attended by local sustainability leaders and elected representatives.
COR Disposal & Recycling purchased the Peterbilt 520EV with support from Portland General Electric’s Drive Change Fund, which has awarded millions of dollars to local organizations to accelerate transportation electrification in Oregon. PGE also helped with the installation of the necessary charging infrastructure through its Fleet Partner program. The cost for the truck itself was $665,831, not including the logo wrap or charging infrastructure.
COR’s new e-truck is a 520EV Peterbilt + McNeilus 25 yarder with a 3-yard hopper. It has a range of about 80 miles—the company’s typical route is 50-60 miles—and takes about four hours to reach a full charge.
COR has been approved to join the next cohort of the Breaking Barriers EV Accelerator program for companies in the Pacific Northwest, and hopes to acquire additional EVs in 2024.
“As COR continues to drive innovation in the solid waste industry, it would be impossible to build sustainable communities without great leadership at the City of Portland and tremendous partners like PGE and Columbia Willamette Clean Cities, who made this fully electric truck a reality,” said CEO Alando Simpson.
