US ride-hailing platform Alto has deployed off-grid chargers from L-Charge, which it will use to expand its EV fleet in Dallas and Los Angeles without upfront hardware costs or dependence on utility infrastructure.

L-Charge’s charging trailers enable customers to use methane gas or hydrogen for off-grid EV charging. They are prepared for immediate deployment to any location, for fast setup without the constraints of construction timelines or grid connectivity.

Each single 180 kW charger is equipped with two charging ports. The system can be configured to enable both connectors to provide 90 kW simultaneously, or for one to deliver 180 kW . The system can generate 4.32 MW of energy in 24 hours from the chosen fossil fuel.

The L-Charge trailers offer customers flexibility, as they can be used for temporary charging needs, then easily removed when a permanent grid connection is achieved. They can also be moved to new locations to support customers’ EV charging expansion strategies.

The company’s charging-as-a-service model has enabled Alto to deploy 180 kW off-grid charging stations powered by gas within weeks rather than the months it might have taken to get a grid connection hooked up.

“No matter how remote the location, as long as a customer has access to an 8.5-foot by 30-foot space to park a trailer, they can take advantage of an L-Charge EV charging station in a matter of hours,” said Dmitry Lashin, CEO of L-Charge. “Our operatives roll up with a trailer carrying a battery pack and a [methane gas]-powered generator. We can deliver our trailer with a virtual pipeline, or we can hook it up to our client’s [existing] pipeline. All the customer has to do is press a button, and they can start charging electric vehicles straight away.”
