IDTechEx’s “Semiconductors for Autonomous and Electric Cars 2023-2033” report predicts a 20.9% one-year compound annual growth rate (CAGR) in semiconductors for electric powertrains due to the mainstream adoption of EVs.
The report breaks down chips and wafers and notes that the battery management system (BMS) contributes to one-third of the silicon used to make electric powertrains. A BMS has one master controller chip and several battery monitoring and balancing (BMB) integrated circuits (ICs) that monitor groups of cells. BMB ICs can monitor 10 to 20 cells in a battery pack and this number is growing. As silicon processes improve, more powerful and capable BMB ICs are being produced, reducing battery pack chips, and growing cell capacities are reducing the number of cells per vehicle.
IDTechEx predicts that the automotive semiconductor industry will grow by 9.4% over the next decade, and the battery EV market will grow by 15%.
