Lohmann, a German adhesive tape company, has expanded its range of EV battery bonding solutions for damping, sealing, electrical insulation, conductivity and thermal management.
Lohmann’s new DuploCOLL TC (thermally conductive) acrylic transfer tapes have ASTM D 5470-tested thermal conductivity of up to 2 W/mK. TC tapes are free of silicones, halogens and solvents and they can adhere to irregular surfaces. Connected to the cooling or heating element inside an EV battery, the TC tapes provide homogeneous heat transmission to keep lithium-ion cells between 20° C and 35° C. The range is UL 94 V-0 flame-retardant, offers short-term heat resistance up to 180°C and has strong electrical insulation with a breakdown voltage of 26 kV/mm. It is available as rolls or tailored high-precision die-cuts in thicknesses from 140 μm to 2 mm.
The TC tapes also provide protection against dust and moisture and compensate for component tolerances. According to the company, they have an advantage over silicone gap pads besides avoiding silicone oil migration: no assembly fixing is needed because the tapes are sticky at room temperature. And as screws or clamps are not necessary, the tapes save on weight.
“As more than half of electronic malfunctions are caused by thermal overstress, a safe and reliable heat transfer within the EV battery is key,” Lohmann said.
