The German Institute for Standardization (DIN) and the German Commission for Electrical, Electronic & Information Technologies (DKE) have published a new standard to help companies implement the mandatory EU-wide digital battery passport, which comes into effect in February 2027.

The standard, DIN DKE SPEC 99100, “Requirements for Data Attributes of the Battery Passport,” provides practical guidance for the passport, which will document data along battery life cycles to help compare their performance.

DIN DKE SPEC 99100 defines data attributes to be included in the digital battery passport based on requirements by the EU Battery Regulation as well as voluntary additions. These may include information about the battery and manufacturer, battery materials and composition, performance and durability, working conditions in raw material extraction, and battery carbon footprint.

DIN DKE SPEC 99100 builds on the publicly funded Battery Pass consortium’s “Content Guidance for the EU Battery Passport,” last updated in December 2023. This publicly accessible guide supports the implementation of the battery passport in line with the requirements of the EU Battery Regulation. The Battery Pass consortium is a collaboration of 11 international organizations from industry, technology and science, led by UK-based strategy advisor Systemiq.

“DIN DKE SPEC 99100 makes the results of the Battery Pass project’s guidelines easily accessible to everyone preparing for the introduction of the battery passport in the European Union. At the same time, we lay the groundwork for further international standardization on this topic,” explains Dr. Torsten Freund, Battery Passport Project Manager at BASF, and Chair of the DIN DKE SPEC 99100 Committee.

The Battery Pass consortium has also published an updated and aligned version of the “Data attribute longlist” on its website, where requirements can be filtered by different battery categories.
