Switzerland has been a leader in sustainability, both in its national policies and in crafting international agreements. In 2017, it was named one of the top five countries achieving the United Nations 2030 Sustainable Development Goals. In 2019, Switzerland announced a goal to be carbon-neutral by 2050 and it is well on its way.

The mountain country imports energy from its neighbours, France and Germany. However, they too are running short on energy generation due to the reduced natural gas supply following the Russia-Ukraine war.
