When somebody asks me what electric car they should buy, the answer often is some Hyundai or Kia. That’s not to say that the South Korean automaker makes the only good EVs around. But its offerings are some of the best, offering fast charging speeds, great range and style in spades. We at InsideEVs are big fans of these vehicles, and think they’re a cool and practical choice for most shoppers.
And now they come with an added bonus: a $7,500 discount thanks to the U.S. government’s rebate for plug-in vehicle purchases. Hyundais and Kias never qualified before, due to strict requirements around where EVs and their batteries must be produced introduced as part of the 2022 Inflation Reduction Act. Now that the brands have started making EVs domestically, a bunch of their models are eligible. And that’s great news for EV shoppers.

New to the list of eligible models are the: 2025 Hyundai Ioniq 5, 2025 Hyundai Ioniq 9, 2026 Kia EV6 and 2026 Kia EV9. The 2025 Electrified Genesis GV70 also qualifies for a credit now. (Hyundai Motor Group owns the Hyundai, Kia and Genesis brands.)
The Ioniq 9 isn’t on sale yet, but it’s a three-row electric SUV much like the wildly popular EV9. The Ioniq 5 and EV6 are some of our favorite EV crossovers. (InsideEVs Editor-in-Chief Patrick George drives an EV6, if that tells you anything.) Another thing to note: The latest versions of all of these models will be some of the first non-Teslas to come equipped with a Tesla-designed charging port. That means with many new Hyundais and Kias, you’ll be able to plug in at Tesla Superchargers without using a pesky adapter.

New, stricter rules around battery sourcing went into effect for the EV tax credit on January 1, eliminating some models from the list—like all Rivians. But the Tesla Cybertruck now qualifies, so there’s that. You can check out the full list of eligible EVs and plug-in hybrids here.
