So, it’s hardly been a week since Ford debuted the F150 lightning, their first all Electric truck and that in itself is a huge indication of the direction Ford is going.
However, not everyone bought it. One guy tweeted at Jim saying “if ford is really committed to an electric future why don’t we see EV versions of the newest stuff like…the Bronco”
To which Jim replied “why do you think we dont?” almost confirming that the sparky is coming
That, in tandem with the press release Ford made this week teasing their EV platform with a few body styles kinda double confirms it’s coming.
And while we don’t have exact details yet, we can make a pretty solidly educated guess that the same battery and motor architecture from the F150 lightning could show up under the sparky bronco
So what does that look like?
So the Ford 150 lightning gets a standard battery pack, but I’m less interested in that. The extended pack, which they have nt release size or capacity for, gets you 563 hp and HERE IT IS 775 lbft of torque
That’s electric power for you folks
So let’s say they drop that sucker in the Bronco – right out the gate it’s more powerful than anything in segment aside from Hummer EV SUV
Dual motors for AWD and no need for a transfer case since the electric power can be finessed by the computers
I’d assume that also means the electric motors and diffs could lock themselves front and rear
Disconnecting sway bars, all the usual goodies
But then there’s suspension – we’re talking almost 600 hp and almost 800 lbft
PEOPLE ARE GOING TO MOB THIS THING offroad so Fox bypass dampers to dissipate heat and allow for extra travel
Sasquatch package standard with 35 inch BFG K02 – the best A/T tires in the game!
Indie suspension up front and back probably like the HUmmer EV
So sure it’ll be wildly capable offroad, no one was arguing that. The thing we want to know is range.
Well the F150 with this battery pack gets 300 miles of range while weighing in at 6500 lbs
1800 of that is just battery – let’s round up to 2000 just to be safe.
The heaviest bronco is 4781 lbs, so add 2000 lbs to that and you’re actually heavier than the F150 – the 1800 is about the same weight
So this means you can probably expect pretty similar range figures.
But then with that weight there comes a lot of other considerations
Can you use the same trails
You’ll get stuck easier
Plus the whole range anxiety thing
Infrastructure is being worked on but is about 5 years away from really reliable
So maybe then you want to look to the Bronco Warthog for your wild adventure vehicle
It burns dino bones, but you can buy dino bones pretty much anywhere so no range anxiety
Plus removing 1800 lbs from the weight brings it back under 5000 lbs which would be much better
And sure the engine will be the new ecoboost the Raptor will get which should make around 475 hp and 550 lbft which is less than the EV, but it’s also a lot lighter
Plus the Bronco warthog will get all the stuff we’ve talked about before. 35 or 37 inch tires, at least 1 locking diff, and all the other goodies too
So at that point, the EV and warthog are pretty evenly matched which leaves it up to the whole EV thing
So i ask you – would you rather keep the 3.5 ecoboost raptor motor under your bronco or would you be down to try an all electric bronco?
