In its latest partnership announcement, Detroit’s Airspace Experience Technologies (ASX) has signed an agreement with Mail Management Services (MMS) out of Lincoln, Neb., to supply electric vertical take-off and landing aircraft (eVTOL) to its fleet in 2025. The announcement was made at CES in Las Vegas.
The eVTOL aircraft from ASX will be used by MMS to transport U.S. Postal Service payloads between cities, airports, and suburbs. With a pure electric model, the ASX Sigma-6 eVTOL aircraft can move up to 1,000 pounds of cargo more than 150 miles, and 2,000 pounds up to 75 miles.
The hybrid ASX Sigma-6, meanwhile, will transport up to 1,000 pounds of cargo for a maximum of 760 miles, and 2,000 pounds up to 380 miles.
“We are committed to de-carbonization and improving performance for our customers. Traffic congestion is an inefficient use of time, fuel, and resources for our customers. By elevating our vehicles above the roadways, we will dramatically enhance performance and reduce carbon emissions,” says John Pool, COO of MMS.
The ASX Sigma-6 eVTOL offers a flexible platform that minimizes failure modes and reduces development and manufacturing costs. Co-founded by CEO Jon Rimanelli in 2017, the company developed its Sigma-6 aircraft after extensive market research, modeling, prototypes, and testing.
“Mail Management’s business is a perfect fit with ASX and Sigma-6. Their mission to modernize, decarbonize, and electrify the logistics structure within our domestic delivery system is seeking exactly what we provide — lower emissions, and more efficient and more accessible transport,” says Rimanelli.
“We built the Sigma-6 to elevate and diffuse traffic for all uses — passenger, cargo, and emergency management. We are proud and excited to work with a company that shares our goals and values.”
Beginning in 2023, MMS will begin its journey toward fleet electrification with infrastructure projects at their owned facilities. The facilities are based in Nebraska, Texas, Wisconsin, Missouri, Michigan, and Colorado.
In turn, it will introduce electric delivery ground vehicles in the latter part of 2023, and continue to add to its fleet with current plans through 2025. The company has grown by 300 percent over the last year and is projected to double its current size in 2023.
